Restore food sovereignty, and the knowledge and practices of food systems and native seeds. Revitalize native language and culture. Educate about the importance of the food we eat today versus traditionally and how it impacts health and climate change.

TALPUNANCHIÑAM is a program that addresses the loss of connection to the knowledge and application of traditional agricultural practices and diversity of native seeds and crops as well as foods, food systems and diet by teaching the importance of growing your own food through school gardens.

The project works with school children to revitalize their connection to seeds, soil, native diet and language through bio-cultural conservation. The school gardens provide a place for children to implement what they are learning making it theoretical and practical. This helps bring back pride and a re-connection to their indigenous identity. 

Our primary focus is on educating them on the conservation of native crops & seed varieties which means they are all in Quechua which is where the element of language comes in. They will learn necessary words to use while in the garden creating a practical platform to teach more Quechua this allows us to help in the efforts to revitalize the language with the younger generations. 

Project Objectives

  • Demonstrate the ease and benefits of having sovereignty over one’s land 
  • Establish the importance of growing and eating native food
  • Conserving the bio-diversity of native seeds and other crops
  • Increase awareness around the connections between individual health, environmental health, bio-diversity and native language conservation.
  • Increase the amount of students speaking Quechua at a primary level by at least 20%
  • Build their pride in their identity
  • Feed our students from the school garden 
  • Show the garden’s capacity to provide access to healthy foods

We aspire to have schools that will together grow enough food and diversity to create a sustainable base for free organic produce for their snacks and eventually lunches. Eventually, we hope to gain the support of the Ministry of Education to bring this project to all public schools in Huancayo.
